Rock Dimensions Climbing and Outdoor Adventure Camp is returning for the 2018 summer season! The day camp is five days a week, Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.
Rock Dimensions, owned by Jenny Allen and Ryan Beasley, was founded in August 1998. Since then, Allen and Beasley have used the organization to provide guided climbing trips and instructions to anyone that’s interested throughout the High Country. Rock Dimensions hires PCIA certified climbing guides, meaning it is their overall goal to provide safe and fun climbing programs for people of all ages.
The Climbing Adventure Camp is set to take place in the Blue Ridge Mountains, providing campers with a wide array of different experiences including, but not limited to: rock climbing and rappelling in the scenic Linville Gorge, learning climbing knots, belaying skills, equipment and terminology, exploring natural, undeveloped limestone caves, navigating and ascending a high ropes challenge course, and climbing the outdoor tower in downtown Boone.
“This camp is a really wonderful way to get the kids in our community out into the environment,” Allen said. “We live in a place that is really accessible, but this allows it to be accessible to kids, as well.”
The climbing days are most definitely suitable for beginning climbers and those who have some basic experience in a gym or outdoors. The days of the Adventure Camp are geared towards challenging campers on a personal level and providing kids with fun adventures that they will be sure to remember for the rest of the summer. Throughout all of this, the environment of the camp is one that is positive, encouraging and respectful, rather than discouraging and intimidating.
“It’s not a big camp, so the ratio is small. It’s neat watching them form little communities with each other throughout the week,” Allen said. “They all appreciate each other and climb together and learn from each other.”
There are two different kinds of camps to fit the climbing skills and ages of all the campers who are just yearning to get out there, explore and climb!
“What’s really unique about our camp is that we serve a wide range of ages,” Allen said. “They all have fun together, and it doesn’t seem to matter that there is an age difference.”
There is the Climbing Adventure Camp, which is for ages 8 and up, that involves climbing the outdoor tower and on natural rock, rappelling, caving and the Discovery Course. The dates for this camp are as follows: June 18-22, July 9-13, July 16-20, and July 30-Aug. 3.
Then, there is the Intermediate Climbing Camp, geared towards kids who are 11 and up. This camp focuses on intermediate climbing, a multi-pitch ascent on Table Rock and a day on the Discovery Course. The dates for this camp are as follows: June 25-29, and July 23-27.
“It’s very typical for us to see kids come back for about three summers in a row,” Allen said, “and then move on to the intermediate camp, so it definitely sparks an interest in them.”
There are partial camp sessions offered for pro-rated prices, and there is a family discount for families who are sending two or more campers to the Adventure Camps.
