Jan. 22, 2014. Read below for a weather update on last night’s storm, current road conditions and cancellations and delays:

Weather: As Ray’s Weather Center noted in its forecast this morning, the weather arrived as “advertised” with snow totals in the 1 to 3 inches in the east; six to eight inches on mountaintops; and three to six inches in between.

Ray’s Weather Center noted that Beech Mountain received eight inches; Boone two inches; Seven Devils four inches and so forth. Click here for more in depth discussion on the recent storm at RaysWeatherCenter.com.

Currently, a National Weather Service wind chill advisory is in effect until 1 p.m. on Wednesday.

With 10 to 20 mph winds and gusts up to 30 mph in biting temperatures, the advisory notes that wind chill values will be in the range of 5 to 15 below zero.

Roads: The N.C. Department of Transportation did a wonderful job of the main roads and highways after the recent arctic blast. Secondary roads, however, are still slick, ice and snow covered.

Last night at about 5 p.m., the Watauga County Communications Twitter feed was alive with weather-related wrecks or emergencies in all corners of the county – near Old U.S. 421, Cove Creek, N.C. 105 near Foscoe and other areas.

Cancellations:

As reported yesterday, Watauga County Schools and Avery County Schools are closed this Wednesday.

Appalachian State University has only cancelled classes before 11 a.m.

Lees-McRae College announced late last night that it was closing for the day due to the weather.
