Sept. 22, 2014. The Watauga County Relay for Life wrapped up yet another successful year of fundraising on June 20. At this year’s event, more than 400 Watauga County survivors, caregivers and supporters displayed their staunch dedication to the eradication of cancer during the Watauga County Relay for Life event this summer.

The Relay event raised more than $100,000 for the American Cancer Society, according to Carrie Phillips, the Relay for Life specialist for the Watauga County area.

“We raised a little over $144,000 total,” said Phillips.

The three top fundraising teams for the 2014 year were Jerry’s Intimidators, Friends for Life and Deerfield Dream Team.

“Jerry’s Intimidators was the top one and raised a total of $11,018.34,” said Phillips. “Friends for Life was second with $10, 216 and third place was Deerfield Dream Team with $9, 438.26.”

The top two individual fundraisers were Paula Ward and Amber Hamby.

The funds were raised by individuals and teams who held 5K races, arts and crafts sales, bake sales, drives and many other events to help raise money toward this year’s monetary total. The anchor event was the Relay for Life held in June, which brought survivors, caretakers and supporters together for a day and night of support, friendship and fundraising.

Fundraising efforts for next year’s Relay for Life of Watauga County have already begun.

“The new year started on Sept. 1,” said Phillips.

The 2015 Relay for Life of Watauga County is scheduled to take place on Friday, June 19, 2015 at Watauga High School. If you are interested in donating to the cause or even joining the Watauga County Relay, click here for more information.
