All of the official climate stations of National Weather Service’s Blacksburg, Va., office set record low temperatures during the recent cold snap, and RaysWeather.com noted that record lows were broken at most of its weather stations this morning.

On Thursday morning, RaysWeather.com recorded a low of -4.8 in Boone this morning, which was significantly lower than the previous record of 1 recorded in 1958 for Feb. 19.

Similarly, Banner Elk recorded a record low of -.7.9 for Feb. 19, which is nearly four degrees lower than the -4 recorded on the same day more than 50 years ago in 1958.

Beech Mountain, which doesn’t have records dating as far back as those two towns, recorded a low of -15.1 on Tuesday morning. The previous low on record was -2, recorded in 1993.

Earlier this week, the National Weather Service issued a wind-chill advisory for the High Country for the past couple of days. Grandfather Mountain received wind gusts as high as 81.4 mph, which was recorded at 1 a.m. on Thursday, when the wind chill dropped to -44.6.

But the lowest wind chill atop Grandfather Mountain was -52.5, which happened at 8 a.m. and again at 9 a.m. on Thursday morning. For the past 12 hours, the wind chill has been in the negative double digits.

See how cold it was in other areas of the Avery and Watauga counties at end of article.
