Oct. 4, 2012. On Friday, Oct. 5, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. OASIS (Opposing Abuse with Service, Information and Shelter) will host an artist’s reception located at the Jones House, at 604 W. King St. in Boone cosponsored with the Peace Rose Sisters.
The event will feature the work of Michelle Major for the fourth consecutive year.
Major is a Hickory native who teaches high school art and works in acrylics and mixed media. She is a domestic violence survivor whose husband attempted to strangle her to death in 2008.
In addition to Major’s works a special tribute will be paid to Dara Watson and Watauga Sheriff’s Deputy William Mast Jr. who both lost their lives in incidents connected to domestic violence this year.
Also, the Peace Rose Sisters, a local group of women who support OASIS, will present a display titled “In Their Shoes,” which they do each year at the event. For each victim of domestic violence in North Carolina over the past year, a pair of shoes will accompany a plaque with information about the victim. Between 80 to 100 shoes are set out each year commemorating men, women and children.
North Carolina ranks No. 4 in the nation for the number of domestic violence victims. OASIS hopes that by presenting this information to the community people will begin to do their part to help stop this problem.
