On Aug. 13, officers with the Avery County Sheriff’s Office arrested 31-year-old Aaron Charles Daniels of Spruce Pine. He was initially charged with “selling with intent to deliver methamphetamine” on two separate occasions and one count of “maintaining a vehicle with intent to deliver drugs.”
Officers received a tip that Mr. Daniels was in the Avery/ Mitchell County area and that he was in a red van. They responded to the area and found Mr. Daniels in the red van and with the help of Mitchell County Sheriff’s office and the State Highway Patrol stopped Daniels vehicle and placed him under arrest. He also had five felony warrants for Failure to Appear in court stemming from previous charges. He was taken before a Magistrate and given a $70,000 secured bond.
While conducting a license checking station on Highway 181 on Aug. 3, 2015, officers from the Avery County Sheriff’s office stopped a vehicle and spoke to the driver, David Joseph Hart, age 20 from Morganton. The officers noticed a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from the vehicle. Upon checking it was determined Mr. Hart had been drinking and was underage. While checking the vehicle officers found a box containing several items of drug paraphernalia and a red pill.
When asked, Mr. Hart stated the red pill was Ecstasy. The pill was tested and it tested positive for Ecstasy. Mr. Hart was arrested and taken to the Avery County jail and charged with Possession of Schedule 1 drug (MDMA), Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and Driving after Consuming Alcohol under 21. He was given a $3,000 secured bond.
On Aug. 5, 2015 officers from the Avery County Sheriff’s office, and the Avery County Municipal Drug Task Force went to a residence on Three Mile Highway to investigate drug information they received earlier.
Upon arrival they secured permission to search the residence from the owner/occupant. Officers found Drug Paraphernalia along with possible Methamphetamine. Julie Riddle, 42, was arrested and taken to the Avery County jail and charged with Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and possession of Methamphetamine. She was given a $25,000.00 secured bond.
Hands across the Border
On Aug. 7, 2015 a join campaign named “Hands Across the Border” was scheduled for the Avery County-Carter County line. Hands across the border is a campaign sponsored by the Tennessee Governors Highway Safety Program that brings agencies from different states together at a border to conduct traffic checks. Due to inclement weather the campaign had to be re-scheduled to a later date.
Later that evening, officers from Avery County Sheriff’s Office, State Highway Patrol, Newland Police Department, Avery County Municipal Drug Task Force, Banner Elk Police Department and the Beech Mountain Police Department held a checkpoint on Highway 221 looking for traffic violations.
During this time officers charged drivers with numerous violations including two misdemeanor drug charges, a DWI charge, and various other traffic violations. One driver was arrested on an outstanding misdemeanor warrant.
