Recent Arrests in Avery, Sheriff’s Office To Begin ‘Booze It & Lose It’ Campaign From June 28 to July 7

June 24, 2013. On the evening of June 16, the Avery County 911 center received several calls about a white Ford Ranger running other cars off the roadway in the Linville area.  Officers with the Avery County Sheriff’s Office responded to the area and located 60-year-old Bill Buckner of Vale, North Carolina on the Linville Bypass driving the vehicle.  Officers observed the vehicle driving on the wrong side of the roadway and made a traffic stop.  Officers noticed a strong odor of alcohol on Mr. Buckner and that he was unsteady on his feet.  Investigation by the responding Officers showed that Buckner had several previous DWI convictions.  Buckner was arrested and charged with felony DWI and placed under a $10,000 bond at the Avery County Jail.

On the evening of June 18, 0fficers with the Avery County Sheriff’s Office stopped to assist a motorist on Millers Gap Highway.  Officers encountered 40-year-old Marty Joe Gordon of Bakersville and twenty eight year old Matthew Hopson of Chestnut Mountain Rd. Officers found that neither man had a valid drivers license. A K-9 belonging to the Avery County Sheriff’s Office alerted to the presence of drugs in the vehicle.  A search of the vehicle revealed marijuana, methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia.  Both men were arrested and charged with several felony drug charges including Possession with intent to Sell or Distribute Methamphetamine.  Hopson received a $20,000 bond and Gordon was placed under a $25,000 bond.

On June 19, investigators with the Avery County Sheriff’s Office received a report of stolen property being possessed by 24-year-old Jesse Moody of Newland.  Investigators located Moody at a construction site in Newland.  After interviewing Moody, the investigators recovered power tools taken from another construction site in Watauga County as well as some power equipment taken from Moody’s employer.  Investigators also found Moody to be in Possession of Schedule IV drugs and Marijuana and paraphernalia.  Moody was later arrested and placed under a $5,000 bond at the Avery County Jail.  Moody is charged with several drug charges as well as Larceny by Employee.  The theft of the tools from Watauga County is still under investigation.

Cody YoungOn June 21, officers with the Avery County Sheriff’s Office arrested 25-year-old Cody Young of Sugar Mountain Rd # 2.  Young is charged with felony Breaking and Entering, felony Larceny and Possession of Stolen Property.  Investigators with the Sheriff’s Office received a report of a theft from a residence on June 5.  Young was identified as a suspect early in the investigation and the property was recovered by Officers with the Avery County Sheriff’s Office.  Young was placed under a $15,000 bond at the Avery County Jail. 

The North Carolina Governors Highway Safety Program is sponsoring a “Booze It and Lose It” campaign from June 28 through July 7 of 2013.  The Avery County Sheriff’s Office as well as other local and state law enforcement agencies will participate in this campaign.  Motorists in Avery County are reminded of the dangers of driving after drinking alcohol.  Have a safe Holiday.
