July 31, 2013. It’s fitting that rain and overcast skies loom above on the last day of July, which has been the wettest July on record for “the vast majority of Western North Carolina,” according to RaysWeather.com.

For this July, it has rained 19.44 inches in Boone through Tuesday.

Here are the other wettest July months that Ray’s Weather compiled:

2013 – 19.44 inches
1941 – 13.05 inches
1949 – 11.80 inches
1933 – 11.18 inches
1989 – 10.42 inches

Ray’s Weather Center notes that it’s likely the 20-inch precipitation mark will be surpassed when the clock strikes midnight.

“The only other time I know of Boone exceeded 20 inches in any month was that infamous September in 2004,” Ray’s Weather Center noted, referring to hurricanes Ivan, Francis and Jeanne.

Last month, the N.C. Climate Office reported that June 2013 was the second wettest month on record since 1895 for much of North Carolina. Ray’s Weather noted that it rained nearly eight inches in Boone for the month of June.

Through June, it had rained 42.44 inches total. Throw in the 19.44 inches of rain in July through yesterday, and that leaves us with 61.88 inches of rain during the first seven months of the year.

As for today, heavy rains may occur later today and this evening, and showers and thundershowers are possible overnight, RaysWeather.com forecasts for Wednesday.
