Powerball Jackpot Jumps To $116.9M, Five Players in North Carolina Win Big Prizes From $100K to $313K

Sept. 22, 2014. The N.C. Education Lottery has recorded strong sales with its Powerball game as players try their luck at winning a jackpot that is currently worth $196 million if taken as an annuity or $116.9 if taken as a lump sum.

Powerball sales are boosting the lottery’s return this year for the education programs it serves. Between Aug. 13 when the jackpot was $40 million andWednesday’s drawing, Powerball sales exceeded $11.4 million in the state. Initial estimates indicate sales will generate more than $4.3 million for education.

The jackpot has rolled over 11 times during the five weeks of sales. During that time, more than 162,000 tickets won prizes totaling more than $1.1 million, including five $10,000 prizes. Retailers across the state have collected more than $800,000 in commissions from Powerball sales since theAug. 13 drawing.

The Sept. 13 drawing produced 17,689 winning tickets ranging from $4 to $10,000, totaling $152,460. Wednesday’s drawing produced 18,053 winning tickets ranging from $4 to $200, totaling $109,771.

The biggest win of the week went to Jeanette Tyler, a debt collector from Durham, who said she’s going to live a little more comfortably after winning $313,045 playing Carolina Cash 5. “This is truly a blessing for me,” Tyler said. “I’m going to fix up my house, buy new furniture, buy some presents for the kids and save a bit.” {Read More}

In Davie County, Advance resident Juvenal Diaz is the second player to win $200,000 playing the new Break the Bank game, which started Sept. 2. He purchased his lucky $5 ticket, worth $138,401 after taxes, at the 4 Brothers on N.C. 801 in Advance. {Read More}

Mary Hansbro of Fayetteville beat odds of 1 in 575,757 when her Carolina Cash 5 ticket matched all five numbers in the Sept. 11 drawing to win the $180,197 jackpot. She purchased the lucky ticket at the Short Stop on Murchison Road in Fayetteville. {Read More}

Annette Bell of Lexington plans to use the $150,000 prize she won in the lottery’s Hot Summer Second-Chance drawing to pay off her car and save for retirement. The Hot Summer Second-Chance drawing let players use their non-winning Hot 5’s, Red Hot 5’s and White Hot 5’s tickets to enter to win one of 30 prizes of $5,000 and one $150,000 prize. Bell’s winning entry was randomly selected from a total of 601,282 made in the drawing, held on Sept. 10. “I was hoping that one day I’d win a big drawing but I never really thought that I would,” Annette Bell said. “I feel so blessed and lucky. Since Thursday, Sept. 11, lottery players more than $19.1 million in total prizes. This includes more than $14.7 million playing instant games and more than $4.4 million playing draw games. Friday’s Mega Millions jackpot is an estimated $72 million if taken as an annuity or $41.8 million if taken as a lump sum. In the Sept. 12 Mega Millions drawing, 27,382 tickets won prizes ranging from $1 to $5,000, totaling $78,251. In Tuesday’s drawing, 22,013 tickets won $42,449 in prizes ranging from $1 to $500.

All or Nothing Report

Players in the All or Nothing game collected $403,850 in prizes this week, including 34 prizes of $500. The game’s top prize is $250,000 and drawings occur every day at 12:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
