For the next month, traffic along Rivers Street will run one lane in both directions because of the replacement of steam lines, according to Mike O’Connor, director of Appalachian State University’s Physical Plant.
Crews have shut down one side of Rivers Street from the pedestrian bridge to the Holmes Convocation Center, and in two weeks crews will switch over to work on the other side as road-cut work continues.
O’Connor said that the one-month timeframe is, of course, weather permitting and doesn’t account for unforeseen factors.
O’Connor added that there will be two other work zones along roads in and around the Appalachian State University campus before the students return for the 2015-16 school year.
The Town of Boone is replacing sewer lines along Hardin Street from the Dan’l Boone Inn to Holmes Convocation Center. This work should begin later in the spring/summer.
O’Connor noted that a steam leak was recently discovered near the Rivers Street pedestrian bridge that enters the parking deck. This was unforeseen and has yet to be scheduled. O’Connor said that this project should be completed before the students return.
