Nov. 6, 2012. On Monday, Nov. 5, Watauga High School hosted Pioneer Spotlight. The program, which was started in 2006, is a program to honor students who have positive character traits based on a positive behavioral support system.

The event, which was originally formed as an annual event, is now held biannually following holding a Pioneer Spotlight last spring. Each student is nominated by a WHS faculty member and for this installment over 40 kids got to be in the spotlight.

“This is just a sampling of the good students and good young men and women we have here at Watauga High School,” said WHS Principal Marshall Gasperson. “We are honoring them for doing good things and being good people.”

During the ceremony, each student was called to the stage to meet with the faculty member who nominated them. Some students shook hands with their teachers and many embraced them. The students were each issued a certificate honoring their positive character traits.

Following the ceremony, a raffle was held where kids had a chance to win such things as Beech Mountain Resort lift tickets and tickets to Tweetsie Railroad. Once the raffle concluded, a reception was held outside the Watauga High School auditorium for parents, students and WHS staff to mingle.
