Monday is a snow day for the High Country’s younger students, while the local college students get to at least sleep in today.

After Sunday’s snowstorm, Avery County Schools and Watauga County Schools cancelled school. The Watauga Campus of Caldwell Community College & Technical Institute cancelled day classes and will make a decision on evening classes at 4 p.m.

Appalachian State cancelled classes prior to noon on Monday, which is when snow flurries are forecasted to taper off and when the National Weather Service’s winter weather advisory ends.

RaysWeather.com reported that Boone received 3 inches of snow and Beech Mountain and Sugar Mountain received 6 inches of snow.

“We have scant reports this morning other than the 3″ at my house east of Boone,” Ray Russell, owner of RaysWeather.com, wrote in Monday’s forecast discussion. “From the radar depiction, I would guess the mountains in Avery County got the “+” in our “6+” forecast with a broad swath of 3′-6″ totals west and 1″-3″ in the eastern third of those counties. I’m sure there are exceptions given the squally nature of the snow last night.”
