The rough and tumble Appalachian Rollergirls, the High Country’s own flat-track roller derby queens, pulled out another strong win in their last home bout of the season at the Holmes Convocation Center on Saturday with a win over the Chattanooga Rollergirls.
The nonprofit team works year-round to incorporate community service into its mission and aims to foster female empowerment among its team members and friends.
These roller derby dolls tackled their Tennessee competitors with a 171-108 final score on Saturday afternoon.
ARG Boone Shiners skater Su White, a.k.a. “Rainbow Rucker,” said fans showed up in great numbers to support the team.
“The crowd was great. They really got into the bout, which helps pump up the skaters on the floor,” she said. “I assisted with track maintenance during the All-Star bout and even I felt pumped from the crowd!”
Jenna Cucco, a.k.a. “Public Jenemy,” agreed.
“They were super supportive throughout the whole bout, and it definitely provided a lot of energy to keep the game strong,” said Cucco. “We were down by maybe 10-15 points in the first five minutes, but once we took the lead we never gave it up.”
Both the Appalachian Rollergirl All Stars and the Boone Shiners B Team competed in the derby double header, and the ladies met with fans and friends for an after party following the bout at 10 High Country Lanes.
The ARG will play in Charlotte on Sept. 17 and in Chattanooga on Oct. 8 to close out the competitive season.
“We were really pleased with overall how our skaters bouted and are looking forward to bouting against them again in Chattanooga on Oct. 8,” said White.
Cucco said the rollergirls learned a lot from the Chattanooga team, which should make for an interesting game in October.
“They were an extremely tough, strong, physical team,” she said. “This time, we’re playing on their court, so we look forward to a very competitive bout.”
