Tommy White’s spectacular landscape photography opens Friday night at the Jones House during Art Crawl and he’ll be joined by Randy Johnson for his first local signing and sale of the new book Grandfather Mountain: The History and Guide to an Appalachian Icon. White’s Grandfather Mountain images play a major role in Johnson’s lavishly illustrated, highly praised new book.

“Almost every image I’ve picked for this exhibition has Grandfather in it or has been taken from Grandfather,” White says.

The maps in Johnson's widely reviewed brand new history book about the mountain, Grandfather Mountain: The History and Guide to an Appalachian Icon, actually show the new parking lot. He visited the site and worked with Sue MacBean and the state trail designer to be sure the lot and new trails were depicted accurately. Johnson will hold a book signing at the Jones House this Friday evening along with a photography exhibit by Tommy White, many of whose images illustrate the book.

Johnson’s new book, Amazon.com’s “#1 new release” in the “mountain” category, has won rave reviews from the state’s biggest newspapers, including the Raleigh News & Observer. The book was profiled early this week on WCNC-TV’s Charlotte Today program (view the segment here) and will be featured tonight at 5 p.m. on UNC-TV’s North Carolina Bookwatch program with D.G. Martin (stream that here). One reviewer said the book, “reads like a James Michener novel.”

White’s work will fill the Mazie Jones Gallery for the entire month of July. Dozens of framed and unframed images will be for sale. White is a noted photography instructor with Mountains to Sea Photography Workshops.

White’s work will be on display and available in many media, including prints on metal, canvas, metallic paper. Some will be displayed and available on stand-out canvas gallery racks, individually and in sets of three related images, including his Boone Fork bridge, fall on Rough Ridge, and winter on Beacon Heights, the first two featured in Johnson’s new book.

The exhibition and signing will be available from 5-8:30 p.m., with visitors asked to enter the gallery from the rear of the building until 7 p.m. when the music ends. Then the event will be open through the front entrance until 8:30 p.m.
