With Population of 10,000, Pfafftown Now Has Its Fourth Resident To Win $1M or More Playing Lottery

June 3, 2014. The community of Pfafftown, which at last count was home to around 10,000 people, now has its fourth resident to win $1 million or more playing the lottery.

Todd Adams, an airline worker from the Forsyth County community, stopped in to purchase a soda on Monday morning at the Stop & Save Citgo on Julian Place in Troutman. While there, he decided to try his luck on a $4,000,000 Multiplier Spectacular ticket.

lottery“I scratched it off and saw I had matched one of the winning numbers,” Adams said. “I thought I may have won $20 or $40, so when I looked at it closer I did a couple of double takes. I got in the car and drove straight to Raleigh.”

Winners of $1 million in the game have the option of claiming it in $50,000 payments as a 20-year annuity or a one-time lump sum of $600,000. Adams took the cash payment and received a check for $415,206 after state and federal taxes were withheld.

“I’m going to invest this money and use it to kick start my retirement,” Adams said as he collected his winnings. “I’m going to make it last and be smart about it. And I may take a nice beach trip later this month.”

Adams is the third player to win a $1 million prize in the $4,000,000 Multiplier Spectacular game. As of Monday afternoon, four $4 million top prizes and seven $1 million prizes remain to be claimed in the $20 game.

Three additional Pfafftown residents have claimed wins of $1 million or more playing lottery games. In February 2013, Rusty Hunter, a handyman, scratched off a $4 million prize in the $4,000,000 Gold Bullion game. Ray Whiteheart was one of three players to win $1.4 million in the October 2010 Cash Splash Millionaire Raffle. In February 2008, Adam Burton said he planned to “have a little fun” with the $1 million prize he won playing the Cash Spectacular game.

Ticket sales have made it possible for the lottery to raise more than $3.3 billion for the state. Net proceeds are used for prekindergarten programs for at-risk four-year-olds, teachers’ salaries in grades K-3, school construction, digital learning initiatives, need-based college scholarships and financial aid.
