Nov. 5, 2012. Chancellor Kenneth E. Peacock from Appalachian State University and other higher education sustainability champions from across the region will meet at Agnes Scott College in Georgia Nov. 7 to kick off the ACUPCC Southeast Regional Collaborative Symposium.
The event, which brings together presidents, sustainability coordinators, faculty and students, fosters dialogue and collaboration among signatories of the American College & University Presidents’ Climate Commitment (ACUPCC) – a network of 660 institutions that have committed to climate neutrality and to producing sustainability-literate graduates.
Peacock will participate in a presidents’ panel Nov. 8, with President Elizabeth Kiss of Agnes Scott College and President Beverly Daniel Tatum of Spelman College in Georgia. The panelists will engage in a dialogue with audience members on how institutional leaders think about climate and sustainability issues and effective ways for faculty and staff to engage their support in institutionalizing sustainability in all aspects of their campuses – education, research, campus practice, and work with local communities.
The symposium’s Southeast focus allows institutions to share strategies regarding the opportunities and challenges specific to the region in their pursuit of sustainability. The event also lays the groundwork for building a regional network of support for problem solving and solution discovery. The keynote address, titled “Sustainability in the South: An Oxymoron?” will be delivered Nov. 7 by David E. Shi, president emeritus of Furman University.
ACUPCC is an intensive partnership among 650 colleges and universities to accelerate the education, research and community engagement to equip society to re-stabilize the earth’s climate, while setting an example by eliminating net greenhouse gas emissions from their own operations.
