On a Tip, Avery County Sheriff’s Office Busts 43-Year-Old Male of Hickory Nut Gap Road for Marijuana

Aug. 19, 2013. On Aug. 16, officers with the Avery County Sheriff’s Office arrested 43-year-old Raymond Grehofsky of Hickory Nut Gap Road. Officers responded to Grehofsky’s residence on a tip about marijuana growing in the area. Officers searched the residence and located several growing marijuana plants, harvested marijuana and items of paraphernalia. Grehofsky was charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, manufacturing marijuana and maintaining a dwelling for controlled substances. Grehofsky was held on a $10,000 secured bond at the Avery County jail.

On Saturday August 24th the Avery County Sheriff’s Office will partner with the Avery County Cooperative Extension Office at the annual Avery County Hazardous Waste Collection Day.  Officers with the Sheriff’s Office will collect outdated and unused medicines and prescription drugs. The collection area is behind the Avery County Board of Education in Newland.  Signs will be posted at the roadside indicating the collection area for the prescription drugs and hazardous waste.  The times of collection will be from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m.  

The Avery County Sheriff’s Office and other local law enforcement agencies are participating the North Carolina Governors Highway Safety Program’s Labor Day “Booze It and Lose It” campaign.  The campaign began Aug. 16 and will continue through Monday, Sept. 2. Residents and visitors to the High Country are encouraged to stay safe during the upcoming holiday.
