Nov. 18 Crime Brief from Avery Sheriff’s Office

Nov. 19, 2013. On the evening of Oct. 31, officers with the Avery County Sheriff’s Office made a traffic stop of a pickup truck on Squirrel Creek Road.  The truck was occupied by three persons and the occupants fled after the traffic stop. Officers located methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia inside the truck.  Officers later located and arrested 33-year-old John York of Mitchell County.  York claimed the drugs in the vehicle and the other two occupants were not charged in this matter.  York was given a $10,000 bond at the Avery County Jail.

On Nov. 05, officers with the Avery County Sheriff’s Office arrested 26-year-old Joshua Hicks of Mountain City, Tenn.  Hicks had an outstanding warrant for his arrest for a Breaking and Entering and Felony Larceny here in Avery County.  Investigators with the Sheriff’s Office obtained the charges against Hicks after an investigation into a reported break-in that occurred in March of this year.  The break-in occurred on Flat Springs Road area of Avery County.

On Nov. 13, 29-year-old Luther Ollis of Banner Elk turned himself into the Avery County Sheriff’s Office.  Ollis was charged with Possession of Heroin with intent to sell.  Mr. Ollis was booked into the Avery County jail under a $5,000 bond. 

The North Carolina Governors Highway Safety Program will kick off a Holiday Click It or Ticket Campaign on Nov. 25.  The campaign will last through Dec. 1.  The Avery County Sheriff’s Office, other local law enforcement agencies and the North Carolina Highway Patrol will participate in the campaign.  Residents and motorist in Avery County are encouraged to wear their seatbelt and to remember that seatbelts save lives.
