North Carolina School of the Arts’ 2013 Summer Session: Going All Art Registration Has Begun, May 1 Deadline

DramaLandingJan. 11, 2013. WINSTON-SALEM – The University of North Carolina School of the Arts (UNCSA) and the Thomas S. Kenan Institute of the Arts have opened registration for UNCSA’s 2013 summer session. Entitled “Going All Art,” the summer session includes summer intensive programs in dance, drama, filmmaking, music and visual art for middle and high school students. Additional summer programs offering professional development for adult students will be announced soon.

Online registration began Jan. 3. The deadline for international students is April 1. Priority registration deadline, which guarantees a place in a program, is May 1. Registrations received after May 1 are accepted on a case-by-case basis as space allows. For complete registration information, fees and to register for a program visit uncsa.edu/summersession. Summer intensive sessions for middle and high school students include:

Dance
June 23–July 26
Ages 12-21

A cross-disciplinary program that provides a highly focused and extensive pre-professional experience for intermediate and advanced dancers. Rooted in classical ballet and modern dance traditions, the program also exposes students to a variety of dance forms to optimize proficiency, versatility and creativity. The goal is to provide the highest level of professional training to encourage each student’s fullest technical and artistic development. All students take daily classes in both ballet and contemporary techniques taught by UNCSA faculty and distinguished guest artists.

Drama
June 23–July 13
Ages 15 and up

Taught by UNCSA School of Drama faculty, along with distinguished guest artists, this program emphasizes the process that leads to excellent performance. Young acting students will spend their days focused on fundamentals of the craft—acting, movement and speech. No previous experience is required—just the passion and persistence for a serious engagement with acting.

Filmmaking
June 23–July 26
Rising high school sophomores through incoming college freshmen

Students will learn about—and experience first-hand—screenwriting, cinematography, directing, producing and digital editing. They also will gain an understanding of the creative, analytical, organizational and cooperative elements of filmmaking and develop their own short narrative film, all with state-of-the-art equipment and facilities as well as professional instruction from our artist-teachers.

Music

Ages 12 and up

Aspiring musicians of all ages encounter rich learning experiences and an abundance of opportunities to perform. Students are immersed in an intensive and supportive musical environment with faculty who are both world-class performers and dedicated teachers. Led by UNCSA’s renowned artist-faculty, summer 2013 offerings include master classes, chamber music, private lessons, technique development and more. Student performances and evening faculty concerts round out the well-designed intensives.

Organ Workshop
June 23–June 29

Designed for both the beginning organist (with sufficient piano background) and the more advanced organist of high-school age, the workshop will delve into topics including both standard organ repertoire and sacred music playing skills with a focus on solid hymn playing techniques and basic improvisation, practice techniques, registration, pedal technique and more. The workshop will feature two stylistically different organs: UNCSA’s Fisk, Op. 75 (III/35 voices; mechanical) and First Baptist Church’s Grooms & Payne (V/97 ranks; electro-pneumatic).

Vocal Workshop
June 23–July 13

Students in the vocal workshop explore a variety of musical styles, ranging from classical art song to opera and musical theatre, through a program that includes classes in voice, movement and acting. Students receive voice master classes, small group voice lessons, movement classes, acting/dialogue coaching, scene staging, sight singing classes, Alexander Technique, in addition to private time with a major voice instructor.

Guitar Workshop
July 7–July 13

Designed for students of varied levels, this workshop provides  private lessons and master classes in days filled with practice, listening, rehearsal and performance.

Harp Workshop
July 7–July 26

A rich musical experience focused on harp technique, musicianship and communication skills, practice techniques and performance practices.  The daily schedule includes private lessons, harp ensemble, chamber music rehearsals, master classes, special music topics, individual practice, performance opportunities and faculty recitals. Students will be placed in ensembles according to their skill level.

Chamber Music on the Hill
July 7–July 26

A rigorous and concentrated program integrating the study of chamber music with private lessons. Mentored and coached each day by active performing artists, students quickly grow and mature in their performance abilities. The three-week time period allows for numerous master classes and public concerts, providing immeasurable performance experience. Applications for the chamber music institute are being accepted in violin, viola, and violoncello.

Visual Arts
June 23–July 20
Ages 14-18

A demanding and stimulating program will offer drawing, design and sculpture studio classes in which students will explore the philosophical as well as the mechanical aspects of the art experience. Beyond the studio, they will dive into historical art concepts and practices and contemporary imagery through slide shows, lectures, library assignments and field trips.
