FRIDAY & SATURDAY North Carolina Barbecue Society’s Barbecue Boot Camp to be held at Sugar Mountain July 14-15

Sugar Mountain will be holding the North Carolina Barbecue Society’s (NCBS) Barbecue Boot Camp July 14th through the 15th. The Boot Camp is two days of classes with Top Chefs and Pit Masters with expertise in North Carolina barbecue.

Jim Early, Founder and Ceo of the NCBS, said that the it was his goal for the organization to teach.

“What we’re doing is trying to infuse new blood into the barbecue industry,” said Early. “Young people are usually foodies who like food and like to cook and want to learn to cook really well with no fear.”

NCBS has 3 cooking schools a year, the one at Sugar Mountain being one of them. Participants in the boot camp are not only given cooking classes but also judging classes so that they are taught not only to cook but to judge as well.

“There are classes on how to cook whole hog, pork ribs, seafood and marinating and trimming steaks, as well as classes on side dishes taught by me,” said Early. “We have the Top Pit Masters in the country teaching these classes”

The NCBS is a nationally and internationally recognized organization praised for their barbecue expertise. One of their main goals is to secure North Carolina as the Barbecue Capital of the World.

“Chefs come from all over the world just to get the NC barbecue flavor to add to their menus. They want to get a leg up on competition,” said Early.“Part of the charm is the comradery of the people from all over and in the country meeting and mixing…I’ve witnessed the reunion of disabled warriors who worked together for most of their life but hadn’t seen each other for almost two decades that we flew out to our boot camp. It’s moments like this that I think are truly special about the camps.”

The camp cost $449 per person for campers that are already members which includes the cookout, classes throughout the weekend, breakfast, lunch, THE party Saturday night and a hat, shirt, apron and recipes with the NCBS logo on it. Participants leave the camp as NCBS certified BBQ Judges as well as with an 18 hour cooking school diploma signed by the NCBS officers, Pit Masters and Chefs which they receive at THE party.

“THE Party is a graduation banquet which features all the food cooked over the two days on a buffet.”

Campers’ spouse or guest may attend THE Party with a camper for an additional $30 fee.
