May 22, 2013. Lane closures will not take place in the U.S. 321 widening project work zone through Blowing Rock from 6 a.m. on Friday, May 24, until 6 p.m. on Tuesday, May 28, due to the Memorial Day holiday.
Weekend travelers are advised to drive with caution as the work area now has temporary pavement markings that may be unfamiliar to some drivers.
Even though there will not be lane closures from Friday through Tuesday, crews will fill the sections south of Green Park Inn with rock for the proposed northbound lanes. Excavation and grading work to construct a ramp up to the top of the rock below Cliff Dwellers Inn will continue to provide access for drilling rigs. This is being performed in preparation for blasting operations that are tentatively scheduled to resume on Thursday, May 30, weather permitting.
Water and sewer utility line work, along with erosion control operations, continues along the project. Crews have completed installing the soil nails for the retaining walls near the Food Lion on Little Springs Road and the Samaritan’s Purse facility on U.S. 321 (the former Hayes Performing Arts Center). Wall work has moved southward between Samaritan’s Purse and the former Scotchman variety store.
The speed limit along U.S. 321 remains 35 miles per hour. The N.C. State Highway Patrol continues to monitor this corridor for speeding violations.
