News from Appalachian: Memorial Day Ceremony on May 27 Honors Those Who Died in Military Service

May 21, 2013. Appalachian State University will hold a Memorial Day ceremony May 27 at 7:30 a.m. at the Veterans’ Memorial on the west side of the Dougherty Administration Building. The ceremony will honor those who died while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces. The public is invited to attend.

Activities include a flag-raising ceremony followed by remarks by Lt. Col. David W. Cox, chairman of Appalachian’s Department of Military Science and Leadership.

A continental breakfast will be served in the administration building lobby following the ceremony. The public is invited to attend.

Cox is a graduate of Appalachian and its ROTC program. He earned a bachelor’s degree in physical education in 1989 and a master’s degree in higher education administration in 2000, also from Appalachian.

images-3Cox’s military assignments include Schofield Barracks, Hawaii; Fort Lewis, Wash.; Fort Bragg; Fort Campbell, Ky.; and Korea. He was selected to serve as an exchange officer with the Australian Army in Brisbane, Australia. He is a graduate of Ranger School, Airborne School, Air-Assault Course, the Expert Infantry Badge Course, Mortar Platoon Leaders Course, Rappel-Master Course, the Basic and Advanced Infantry Officers courses and the U.S. Army Command and General Staff Officer College.

He was assigned to lead the ROTC program at Appalachian in April 2011.
