Newly Appointed Watauga County Board of Elections Members To Be Sworn at Noon

By Jesse Wood

The Watauga County Board of Elections will meet at noon on Tuesday, July 21.

Newly appointed members on the three-member board, Luke Eggers, Bill Aceto and Stella Anderson, will be sworn in, and then the board will hold its July meeting, the first with the new board.

Eggers and Aceto are Republicans who are serving consecutive terms. Anderson will succeed Kathleen Campbell, who didn’t want to serve again, as the Democrat representative on the elections board. Anderson has served on the Watauga County Board of Elections in the past.

Among the expected agenda items will be the scheduling of a special candidate filing period for the mayoral race in Boone. Mayor Andy Ball announced that he is resigning to move to Asheville on Friday, which happened to be the last day for candidate filing in the 2015 municipal elections.

At the end of last week, Watauga Elections Director Matthew Snyder said that the Boone Town Council will consider an interim mayor at its next council meetings. This person would serve until the citizens of Boone elect a new mayor in November.

Snyder added that the Watauga County Board of Elections will add this item for opening a special candidate filing period for the mayoral race to the board’s meeting next Tuesday at noon, which also happens to be the time that the new three-member elections board is sworn in.

“I am not sure how long the filing period will be whether it’s one week or two weeks,” Snyder said.
