NCDOT to Begin Bridge Replacement Project Next Week in Watauga County on Beaver Dam Road Monday

June 12, 2014. On Monday, June 16, the N.C. Department of Transportation will begin replacing a bridge on Beaver Dam Road over Little Beaver Dam Creek in Watauga County. During construction, a portion of Beaver Dam Road will be closed and a detour will be in place.

Motorists traveling south on Beaver Dam Road will be directed to take North Fork Road to Old U.S. 421 before turning onto Silverstone Road. The detour will then take motorists to Laurel Branch Road and then Forest Grove Road before returning to Beaver Dam Road. Motorists traveling north on Beaver Dam Road will reverse the detour.

Signs will be in place to help motorists navigate the detour and the road closure. The road will remain closed until the new bridge is completed in mid August.

The bridge being replaced on Beaver Dam Road was built in 1963 and is considered functionally obsolete and structurally deficient. That means that although the bridge is safe for the traveling public, it was built to design standards no longer in use and requires costly maintenance to remain functional.
