Believers in Christ and the power of prayer came together at the Boone Mall on Thursday for the inaugural High Country National Day of Prayer Festival.
Orchestrated by Salvation Ministries, a Boone-based organization, the one-hour public prayer meeting drew a crowd of people who came together to pray for our country.
Following this year’s “Wake Up America” theme, pastors, ministry leaders and elected officials took to the podium and urged the local faith community to step up and follow God’s commandment to turn the nation to Him in prayer.
The High Country is one of innumerable communities across the country who took time to observe National Day of Prayer on Thursday.
Messages and prayers included:
- The national anthem performed by Dr. Priscilla Porterfield, professor at Appalachian State University’s Hayes School of Music
- A prayer for families delivered by the Rev. Jason Powers, youth minister at Mount Vernon Baptist Church
- A call to the nation by the Rev. Chris Hughes
- A prayer for the military by Roman Gabriel III, president of Sold Out Youth Ministry and former NFL athlete
- A prayer for the High Country community by the Rev. Peter Vandenberg of Middle Fork Baptist Church
- A keynote message from former North Carolina senator Dan Soucek
- A prayer for the nation and closing message from the Rev. Charlie Martin of Bethel Baptist Church
