N.C. Lottery Weekly Wrap-Up, Lottery Prizes Top $23M

Sept. 8, 2014. Pick 3 players who like to play triple 8’s saw a seven-figure payout in a week where lottery winners across the state scratched and matched their way to $23 million in total prizes. Prizes of $1 million and $150,000 were also awarded and a trio of Cash 5 tickets split a jackpot worth nearly half a million dollars.

For Pick 3 players who had a ticket for the number 8-8-8 in Saturday’s daytime drawing, the winning three-digit combination resulted in $1.6 million in total prizes. An exact match on a $1 Pick 3 ticket wins the game’s top prize of $500. In all, Pick 3 players won more than $4.3 million this week.

A Johnston County man scratched off a $1 million prize, the largest individual lottery prize of the week. Ernest Thorb Jr. of Clayton won the prize after buying a $10 ticket for the Millionaire 7’s game at the Raceway 991 on South Saunders Street in Raleigh. She was left “speechless” over the Labor Day weekend when one of her lottery tickets turned out to have a $150,000 prize. One of the Cash 5 players to win a third of Thursday’s $474,405 Cash 5 jackpot has already claimed his winnings. Randel Holland, a Raleigh businessman, woke up at 3 a.m. Friday, checked his Cash 5 tickets, and said he was too excited to go back to sleep. He bought his $158,135 winning Quick Pick ticket at the Kangaroo Express on Wake Forest Road in Raleigh. {Read More}

The other two Cash 5 tickets to win $158,135 shares of the jackpot were sold at Woodies on Tryon Street inCharlotte and the AAA Mart on N.C. 66 South in Kernersville. The winning numbers in the drawing were 2-6-10-23-24. The other ticketholders have 180 days to make their way to lottery headquarters to claim.

Since Thursday, Aug. 28, lottery players won more than $16.8 million playing instant games and more than $6.5 million playing draw games. Sixteen prizes awarded were worth between $10,000 and $50,000. In alphabetical order by the winner’s hometown, they are:

Friday’s Mega Millions jackpot is an estimated $33 million if taken as an annuity or $19.7 million if taken as a lump sum. In the Aug. 29 Mega Millions drawing, 23,648 tickets won prizes ranging from $1 to $1,000, totaling $46,878. In Tuesday’s drawing, 18,566 tickets won $43,922 in prizes ranging from $1 to $500.

Saturday’s Powerball players have the chance to win a $110 million jackpot if taken as an annuity or $67.9 million if taken as a lump sum. The Aug. 30 drawing produced 13,902 winning tickets ranging from $4 to $200, totaling $93,879. Wednesday’s drawing produced 14,025 winning tickets ranging from $4 to $300, totaling $104,196.
