Daniel Allen of Waxhaw in Union County beat odds of 1 in 5.1 million to win a $1 million Powerball prize in Saturday’sdrawing. The win continued a lucky streak for North Carolinians in the Powerball game. The Powerball jackpot has climbed back into triple-digit millions with a $137 million jackpot annuity up for grabs inSaturday’s drawing. If claimed as a lump sum, the winner would take home $87.9 million. North Carolina has had four Powerball jackpot winners of $74.5 million to $188 million.

From March 6 through March 12, instant players won $24.6 million and draw game players won $5.4 million, including $4 million from North Carolina draw games Pick 3, Pick 4, Cash 5 and All or Nothing. Since last weekend’s drawings, Mega Millions and Powerball players won more than $1.4 million in prizes bringing the seven-day total to more than $30 million in prizes statewide.
Ticket sales have made it possible for the lottery to raise more than $3.6 billion for the state. Net proceeds will be used this year to help pay salaries of teachers and teacher assistants, for pre-kindergarten programs for at-risk four-year-olds, for school construction and repair, and need-based college scholarships and financial aid.
