Music on the Fringe: Espresso News-Low Bar Host Viking Moses Tonight, Eugene Chadbourne Thurs., Sept 27

Eugene Chadbourne

By Jesse Wood

Sept. 21, 2012. Devon Tuttle and Nathan Sheets have been booking shows around town for three years now, including infamous “garage-rock” shows at a undisclosed house in the county. Finally, the duo have a “concrete space to broaden our horizons” at Espresso News and Low Bar on Howard Street.

The first show at their new venue took place last week, and today, Friday, Sept. 21, Viking Moses and Brandon Holdt will perform. Sheets called Viking Moses, “one of America’s greatest living songwriters and performers” and his performances “goosebumps worthy.”

He added that Holdt, who used to play in Boone’s Red Snapper Family, “messy folk music for fans of Will Oldham and Neil Young.”

The performances that Tuttle and Sheets book are intimate and “aren’t necessarily” suited for the bar atmosphere. (The Low doesn’t have that normal raucous bar mentality.)

The diversity of the acts is broad, but all seem to be on the fringe and experimental, and some of the acts have been described as idiosyncratic pop music. Tuttle assured that the music is not pop in the sense of “Brittany Spears.”

“It’s pretty broad and there is no [cohesive] theme between the acts. It’s music for the sake of music,” Sheets said. “We are looking for bands that in our eyes are doing something different.”

These acts are also wouldn’t normally be found in Boone, such as multi-instrumentalist Eugene Chadbourne.

Next Thursday, Chadbourne will perform. To the uninitiated his music might sound strange but listen to him long enough and he shines. Sheets described his music as “free improvisational playful country punk.” The avant-garde Chadbourne has been making music since the ‘70s and was one of the pioneers in the low-fi music movement, self releasing many cassette tapes. He has worked with the Violent Femmes, Camper Van Beethoven and Butthole Surfers, among others.
