Shadow Grass

Get ready to fasten your seatbelts this coming Saturday night, Oct. 7, as Joe Shannon’s Mountain Home Music presents “Bluegrass – Hither and Yonder”. This show will take you on a fast-paced ride though the twist and turns of all things bluegrass, featuring some of the hottest picking you will find anywhere – Think Thunder Road in overdrive! The concert features two high-energy bands, ShadowGrass and Strictly Clean and Decent, at the Harvest House Performing Arts Venue in Boone with a 7:30 p.m. show time.

JSMHM director, Rodney Sutton, states, “This week’s concert will definitely focuses on bluegrass music, but know that anytime Strictly Clean and Decent is on the program, you can expect a wide variety of musical styles to be added to the mix. Patrick Crouch has a reputation for nurturing and promoting young musicians, and ShadowGrass continues to gain recognition as one of the very best young bluegrass bands in the region”. “JSMHM is excited to have Crouch host this show, his knowledge of the music and his witty commentary always keep the concerts flowing and the audience amused, entertained, and laughing”, Sutton added.

Strictly Clean and Decent

ShadowGrass is a group of young musicians from Western North Carolina and Southwestern Virginia who crossed paths at local fiddle conventions in the summer of 2014. They began a musical journey that has led them to play and compete together, winning numerous individual and band contest and also to be featured at a slew of nationally known festivals such as MerleFest and The National Folk Festival. Just last week ShadowGrass was honored to be chosen as a featured youth band for the 2017 IBMA World of Bluegrass Festival in Raleigh. The band is fronted by 13 year-old flatpick guitar phenom, Pressly Barker, who continues to tear-through guitar contest and besting his mentors, Wayne Henderson and national champion Steve Lewis. Barker won first place this year at prestigious competitions such as The Galax Fiddler’s convention and The Wayne Henderson Guitar Contest! Barker’s band mates are no slouches either, with each member also turning heads on their respective instruments. Their concerts showcase the talents of 17 year old Luke Morris on mandolin, 16 year old Clay Russell on banjo and 12 year old Kyser George on bass. Although they have their own style, ShadowGrass is honored to be playing in the shadow of great bluegrass legends. Their foot-tapping music and charming personalities continue to draw a crowd and gain encouraging fans with each new place they visit. ShadowGrass is looking forward to contributing to the heritage of bluegrass music for years to come.

In addition to multi-instrumentalist Patrick Crouch, Strictly Clean and Decent is an acoustic trio that also features, Crouch’s better half, guitarist Kay Crouch. Rounding out the group is up-right bass player, Ron Shuffler. They are dedicated to performing a variety of musical styles in an acoustic setting, and their combined blend of brilliant vocal harmonies tops a solid instrumental foundation. SC&D’s eclectic repertoire includes modern folk songs by American, Canadian, and Irish songwriters, the fiery breakdowns and songs of family and home found in both traditional and contemporary bluegrass settings, and centuries-old Celtic airs and dance tunes. All of this is peppered with a healthy dose of popular jazz standards, swing and western swing music, and a few classic country tunes thrown in to provide a program certain to be enjoyed by all.

Shuffler is a veteran of the early Top 40 and beach music scene, but also is well known in country and bluegrass circles. His solid bass playing and impeccable harmony vocals are without equal. Kay Crouch performs on the guitar, flute, piano, and tin whistle with Strictly Clean and Decent.  Her interpretive vocals are an asset to the trio that she joined in 1991. Patrick Crouch handles the mandolin, banjo, dobro, fiddle, guitar and is the emcee for the trio. His intense, often pyrotechnic but always tasteful, instrumental skills are the highlight of every Strictly Clean and Decent show. Crouch assures everyone that this “Bluegrass – Hither and Yonder” concert will feature both bands throughout the evening.
