Numerous stories regarding Kafitz had a home in the “most read” in February as the Watauga County Board of Commissioners jumped into the fray. Commissioner John Welch penned a letter stating that the superintendent “should be held to a higher standard” and the entire board of commissioners discussed how to avoid giving Kafitz a state-mandated raise with local funds.
The Blowing Rock Chamber of Commerce presented Sunset Tee’s and Hattery with the Business of the Year award at a banquet on Feb. 12. In all 27 local businesses and individuals were nominated for eight different awards.
At a retreat in February, the Watauga County Board of Commissioners first broached the idea of abolishing the local Department of Social Services board. While Democrats cried that “politics were at play,” Republicans mentioned that this move would give the board more control of the multi-million dollar budget and hiring and firing of the next director. After a public hearing in May, the Republican-led board voted to abolish the board.
On Valentine’s Day, Appalachian Mountain Brewery opened its doors on Boone Creek Drive near the mall.
