Amy Tilley Bower, a former fifth-grade teacher at Cove Creek Elementary School was charged with two counts of “sexual activity with a student” and two counts of “indecent liberties with a child” in August. She pleaded guilty in December.

The first meeting with all three new members of the Watauga County Board of Elections on Aug. 12 went national after a YouTube video of the meeting made the rounds on the Internet. The film crew for The Rachel Maddow Show came to Boone and also featured High Country Press coverage on her show.

A familiar trio opens another establishment in Blowing Rock – the New Public House and Hotel. Cobb and Cindy Milner and chef-extraordinaire Michael Foreman, who are also behind Gideon Ridge Inn and Bistro Roca, opened the new establishment on Sunset Drive in the former location of the historic Sunshine Inn and more-recent Crippen’s Country Inn.

The Watauga County Board of Commissioners voted 3-2 to cancel a $1.7 million contract on a 200-acre property along N.C. 194, three miles outside of town, for the purpose of a developing a business park. The vote followed a public hearing, where an overwhelming majority spoke in opposition to the development of the farmland.
