Monday Music Mash-Up; Our Listing of Live Music from Around the High Country for the Week of Jan. 12-18

Jan. 12, 2015. Nothing warms you up in the winter like live music, and the High Country has enough live music events to keep you tapping your toes all season long. Each week, the Monday Music Mash-up is your go-to spot to find the latest news on concerts, shows and gigs all throughout the High Country. Check out the website every Monday for the latest lineup, and make a plan to enjoy some tunes this fall.

The Watauga Community Band will hold its practice on Tuesday, Jan. 13. The band performs several concerts of various styles of music throughout the year, and is open to community members who play a woodwind, brass, or percussion instrument. ASU and CCC students may receive class credit if desired.

Beginner Shag Dance lessons just in time for Valentine’s Day! Lessons will be on Tuesdays at 7:30 p.m. at the Moose Lodge in Boone. The price is $30 for six weeks, starting Jan. 6. For more information, contact Boone Shag Club President Chip Nowood at 828-963-2665.

Boone Healing Arts Center will host modern dance lessons on Wednesdays. In this Modern Dance class, participants will explore full-body movements, technical specificity and strength building as they experience the sensation of moving through space and time. To correspond with the New Year, the theme for music in January’s Modern Dance Class is “A New Start”.

On Thursday, Jan.15, Windsync will play at the Ashe Arts Center. WindSync has distinguished itself among classical music ensembles as North America’s foremost emerging wind quintet. The ensemble is recognized internationally for dramatic and adventurous programing in venues ranging from concert halls to museums, universities and schools. The young, energetic group plays exclusively from memory, including elements of staging and choreography, and focuses on building connections with audiences through dynamic concert programming and charismatic stage presence. Tickets are $12 adults and $5 students.

On Thursday, Jan. 15, The Pedalin’ Pig will host live acoustic music in the bar area. For more information, call the Pedalin’ Pig at 828-898-7500.

Twig’s Restaurant in Blowing Rock hosts live music every Friday and Saturday night, from 9 p.m. until 1 a.m. featuring great local and regional artists with no cover charge.

On Friday, Jan. 16, Lost Province Brewing Company will host Freakin’ Firkin Friday at Five with the release of a special 12-gallon cask of beer at 5 p.m. Local band Redleg Husky will be performing at Lost Province Brewing Company on Jan. 16, at 7:30 p.m. The event is free.

On Friday, Jan. 16, BRAHM will host an Old Time Dance and Night at the Museum. Come in out of the cold and shake a leg with the fun and comradery of old-time dance – circles, squares and lines! Absolutely NO experience is necessary and people of all ages are welcome. Dance instructions will be given by experienced caller John Turner and live old-time music will be provided by the Laurel Creek Stringband. On Sunday, Jan. 18, the Green Park Inn’s Music on the Veranda (Indoors!) will present The Harris Brothers at 5 p.m. For more information about this event, call 828-414-9230.

On Sunday, Jan. 18, Canyons in Blowing Rock will host the weekly Sunday Jazz Brunch with Todd Wright. Starting at 11 a.m., the event will feature live jazz music at Canyons located at 8960 Valley Blvd. in Blowing Rock. For more information about this event, call 828-295-7661.
