Mission, Outreach Commission of The Church of Holy Cross Announces Valle Country Fair Grant Recipients

This year’s Valle Country Fair takes place Saturday, Oct. 20, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Aug. 17, 2012. Mission and Outreach Commission of The Church of the Holy Cross in Valle Crucis congratulates the following charitable organizations, which have been designated as 2012 recipients of Valle Country Fair Grants.

Here are the 7 organizations with a brief description of how each will use this resource:

1. Avery County Smart Start, A Partnership for Children will purchase materials for each of its 14 “Raising a Reader” Centers to host Family Game and Learning Nights.

2. Children’s Council of Watauga County requested funds to support a portion of the salary for a parent educator in one of its nationally accredited early childhood programs, parents as Teachers (PAT) and/or Incredible Years (IY). The Children’s Council intends to offer both of these programs to the community’s highest risk families in the coming year.

3. Community Care Clinic will use their grant money to support their Diabetes Program which includes primary care, case management, education, access to vision care and podiatry.

4. Hospitality House will continue to support existing programs such as Emergency Shelter Services, Long-Term Traditional Housing, Family Housing, Permanent Supportive Housing, Rock Haven Independent Living Facility, Bread of Life Community Kitchen and Food Box Program.

5. Parent to Parent Family Support Network wants to use these funds to continue their Core Services, some of which are: providing families and service providers information on disabilities and health conditions, matching families with a trained volunteer family for emotional support and information, sponsoring support groups, connecting families to resources, and sponsoring community workshops.

6. WAMY Avery Youth (Avery Yo!) will use its grant funds to subsidize childcare services provided at local Avery County schools in after-school childcare programs. This is very necessary today particularly because a freeze is in place on childcare subsidy monies provided by the Department of Social Services.

7. Western Youth Network plans to use these funds to subsidize middle school students to attend WYN after school every day for one full year. These students who will receive a Holy Cross scholarship attend free of charge due to their family’s economic status. As WAMY Avery Youth has suffered funding cutbacks, so has WYN’s budget been negatively affected by the elimination of state and federal grants.
