Mills was arrested on November 22, 2015, after Avery County Deputy Greg Taylor discovered Mills actively manufacturing methamphetamine at an address located on Spanish Oak Road in Avery County.  Detective Casey Lee’s investigation confirmed the presence of an active meth lab on the property.  Mills was found guilty after a three day trial.

According to District Attorney Seth Banks, “Methamphetamine is a poison and its production, sale, and use represents a blight on our beautiful mountain communities. I and my office are committed to do all that we can to root out those who would produce this poison.”

The Honorable Gary Gavenus, Senior Resident Superior Court Judge, sentenced Mills to a minimum of 6 years and 11 months, and to a maximum of 9 years and 4 months in prison.

Banks went on to say that “I appreciate the hard work of Assistant District Attorney Penn Dameron, the Avery County Sheriff’s Office, and the SBI in seeing that Bennie Lee Mills was brought to justice.”
