May 23, 2014. Memorial Day is a day to recognize, remember and honor our military veterans. The High Country is celebrating Memorial Day with numerous events throughout the holiday. There are many ways to honor our veterans and celebrate their lives so check out the list of events below to see how you can get involved.
Saturday, May 24
Second Annual Watauga Lake Winery Memorial Event: On Saturday, May 24, Watauga Lake Winery of Butler, Tenn. will host its second annual Memorial Day event from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. as a fundraiser for Tennessee Fisher House, an organization that houses families of military members who are receiving in-depth medical attention at nearby hospitals. The event is free to the public and will feature musical bands and craft vendors. The event will also host a hamburger and hot-dog lunch and a silent auction. All proceeds will go to the Tennessee Fisher House.
Sunday, May 25
Watauga Community Band Memorial Day Concert: The Watauga Community Band will perform its annual Memorial Day Concert at 3:00pm, Sunday, May 25 at the Rosen Concert Hall, in the Hayes School of Music, on the campus of Appalachian State University. The band, under the direction of Bill Winkler, will honor our fallen service men and women with pieces such as “Armed Forces Salute,” arranged by Bob Lowden, and “Mansions of the Lord,” by Randall Wallace. The band will also perform “Each Time You Tell Their Story,” a poem written by Dr. Samuel J. Hazo and set to music by his son, Samuel R. Hazo. The concert is free, and all are welcome to join in honoring our military heroes.
Mountain Home Music Concert: A musical celebration for the Memorial Day weekend will be presented by Mountain Home Music at Boone United Methodist Church on Sunday, May 25 at 7:30 p.m. Music for the evening will be classic country and patriotic. Featured is David Johnson, a familiar face and great friend of Mountain Home Music. For more information about this event click here.
Monday, May 26
Memorial Day Ceremony at Boone Mall: This Memorial Day, May 26, Boone Mall will host the eighth annual Memorial Day Ceremony held by The High Country Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America. The ceremony will begin at 10:30 a.m. Memorial Day with a performance by the Watauga Community Band. Watauga High School JROTC cadets will provide the honor guard and Generation Excellent, a choir group from Asheville, will sing and give a theatrical presentation. Memorial Day Ceremony at ASU: Appalachian State University will host a Memorial Day ceremony and reception on Monday, May 26, at 7:30 a.m. at the Veterans Memorial, located adjacent to the Dougherty Administration Building on campus. Because of construction in the administration building, the reception featuring breakfast foods will be held outdoors. In the event of inclement weather, the ceremony and reception will be held in Plemmons Student Union’s Solarium.
Memorial Day Golf Tournament and Cookout: Jefferson Landing of West Jefferson, N.C. will host a Memorial Day Golf Tournament to benefit the Ashe County Free Medical Clinic. The tournament is being played on Monday, May 26, at 1 p.m. It will be a four person scramble and cost $25 per person plus cart fees. A cookout will be held at The 19th Hole Grille afterward. The bar will open at 5 p.m. and dinner buffet reservations will be available from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m
Memorial Day Celebration at Raffaldini Vineyards: On Monday, May 26, Raffaldini Vinyards in Ronda, N.C. will host a Memorial Day celebration from 11 a.m to 5 p.m. The celebration will feature award-winning wine and smooth jazz performed by local piano artist Justin Nelson. There will also be a fully stocked deli-case and authentic Italian gelato provided by Cafe Gelato of Winston-Salem.
Memorial Day Color Blast 5K: On Memorial Day, May 26, Hospitality House and Western Youth Network (WYN) are teaming up to host the Memorial Day Color Blast 5K Run/Walk to raise funds, awareness and support for families and youth in our community. The event will take place on the Boone Greenway Trail at Clawson-Burnley Park beginning at 5 p.m. For more information about this event click here.
