by Becky Petchenik

Aug 22, 2013. In hopes of providing relief to the women in Boone and the Boone area suffering from breast cancer, The Haven and Through Healing Eyes have come together to sponsor an event that does more than just raise awareness and money.

On Aug. 24, Melissa Reaves will be performing a benefit concert at the Harvest House in Boone, sponsored by Through Healing Eyes, Bare Essentials Natural Market and The Haven.  The performance will start at 6 p.m. and last till 8 p.m. with a health fair and yoga session at 5 p.m.  The event will benefit women in the Boone area suffering from breast cancer.  The concert is free, but donations are greatly appreciated.

Local health care providers and natural health practitioners will have space at the event to connect with the community and reach out to those afflicted with breast cancer.

Since 2005, Through Healing Eyes has been raising money for breast cancer research and to help patients and survivors with expenses not covered by insurance.  They have also been committed to creating a community for women in the Boone area who are the most in need.  Some of the recipients of the funds raised by Through Healing Eyes are the Susan G. Komen Foundation, Strides to Recovery at Catawba Medical Valley Medical Center and the Spirit of Women at Frye Regional Medical Center.

Reaves is an experienced performer with several awards and accolades, including winning the 1999 Lilith Fair Talent Search, and has shared the stage with musicians like Cyndi Lauper, Robert Plant and Sheryl Crow.

A charismatic and talented performer, Reaves’ impeccable skill with a guitar is paralleled only by her impressive vocal range.  She blends traditional Rock & Roll, funk rhythm and blues to form a distinct and acrobatic sound that lends itself beautifully to a wide range of originals as well as a few select covers including a spectacular rendition of “Purple Haze” on her third album “Sentimental Anthem.”

The benefit promises to be exciting and entertaining.  If any local healthcare practitioners and vendors would like to get involved, simply arrive to the event at 4 p.m. and a massage chair and space for a table will be available.  For more information, visit the event’s Facebook page, here.
