by Madison V. Fisler

Aug. 19, 2013. Now in its second year, the Small Plate Crawl, hosted by Boone Independent Restaurants, will give folks of the High Country an opportunity to taste a little something from all of their favorite restaurants, and maybe a few they haven’t discovered yet.

Each day this week, we will be profiling a few of the restaurants that are participating, in order to give customers a chance to be introduced to their new favorite restaurants before their big date.

The 1861 Farmhouse Restaurant and Winery

1861 Farmhouse Restaurant and Winery, located in beautiful Valle Crucis, is a sight to see. Originally built in 1861, the farmhouse was renovated into a restaurant and a winery by Steve and Alison Garrett. Now, the picturesque location provides a lovely spot for a glass of wine and a fantastic meal that won’t soon be forgotten.

“The 1861 Farmhouse Restaurant and Winery focuses on local produce, cheeses, and, where possible, meats.  We have our own estate, organic garden, and grow much of the produce for our restaurant,” said Alison Garrett.

“What we can’t produce ourselves we purchase from local farmers.  We are blessed to have many wonderful family farms in the Valle Crucis area.  We want to showcase our Chef’s creative use of fresh, locally grown food with the Small Plate Crawl menu.”

For the small plate crawl, the restaurant’s chef Sam Beasley, former Fire on the Rock Champion, has worked on a creative and delicious menu which will include scrumptious items like honey-chipotle glazed pork tenderloin tostada, North Carolina mountain trout po’ boy sliders and even banana pudding among many other choices. The restaurant will be open for the crawl Sept. 3-5 from 11:30 a.m. through 3:00 p.m.

Don’t forget to try one of the 1861 Farmhouse’s award winning wines, available for $5 per glass with a special 20 percent off discount on bottles.
