Aug. 29, 2013. The Mayland Community College’s Avery Learning Center hosts a number of upcoming Continuing Education Classes that have various schedules and start times.
From Chainsaw Operation, Photoshop Elements and Apple Butter Days to Computer Basics and Creating Useful Appalachian Baskets, these courses offer a variety of life-long learning experiences for “citizens to develop their fullest potential in whatever vocational, intellectual or cultural areas they desire,” according to the college’s website.

Creating Useful Appalachian Baskets (24 Hours)
This heritage arts course will begin with a little basket history then move into materials/supplies, basket construction and adding personalized, finishing touches to student’s baskets. Classes will be personalized to suit the interests of the students who are looking for a way to supplement their income or simply discover their creative side. A supply kit will be provided by the instructor the first night of class. Cost of supply kit to be announced. Nutrition on the Run (12 Hours)
You are on the run from daylight to dark sometimes eating whatever you can find. Don’t sacrifice your health for a busy schedule. Let Registered Dietician Tonia Phillips guide you in food selection and menu planning for the family on the run. Increase Business Productivity Using Your Smart Phone (6 Hours)
This course will introduce smart phone users to new methods of managing and marketing their business. We will concentrate on increasing productivity through the use of applications such as Google Calendar, Google Docs, Gmail, Dropbox, accepting payments using your smartphone, etc. Discuss tools for basic marketing of your business to smartphone users utilizing applications like Four-Square, Yelp, Facebook and more. Internet & E-Mail Made Easy (24 Hours)
Use of Microsoft Internet Explorer will be covered as the student begins to surf the net in the first session. Identification of the various icons and buttons will provide comfort “out there in cyberspace.” Downloading files and finding them later will be a primary topic in this class. Extreme Etiquette (1.5 Hours)
Did you know that you have five (5!) seconds to make a positive first impression on the people you meet? What are the personal qualities that can help make a positive and lasting impression? Participates will experience proper introductions, handshakes, electronic etiquette, networking and social skills. This class is lead by dynamic entrepreneur, coach and high energy speaker, Melissa Boyce! Class will begin at 6 PM at the Mayland Community College Avery Learning Center on September 16. Photoshop Elements (39 Hours)
This comprehensive, 39 hour course covers the most popular features of Photoshop Elements. Topics to be discussed will include correction of exposure, cropping images, creating custom cards and much, much more. Students are encouraged to bring their own photos to be used as teaching tools. Powder Puff Mechanics (6 Hours)
Ladies, don’t find yourselves stranded. Learn the basics of car maintenance: adding fluids (radiator, windshield wiper, oil and transmission), change a tire, check tire pressure, and more. Participants will be checking their own cars. This one’s for the ladies, so don’t miss out. Class will begin at 6 PM at the Mayland Community College Avery Learning Center on September 17. Notary Public (8 Hours)
This eight-hour class prepares students for the required NC Notary Public test. To become a notary, you must be 18 years of age, have a high school diploma or GED, and pass the test given at the end of class. Pre-registration and pre-payment is required 24 hours before the class date. Participants must purchase and read the manual prior to the class. Certified Nursing Assistant I (160 Hours)
This state required course for those wishing to become a CNA consists of classroom work, lab, and clinical rotations. At the end of the course a separate State approved agency does the competency testing for a fee of $102. Six days of clinical rotation will be scheduled starting as early as 6:30am. Some Saturday class and lab participation may also be required. Random drug screening and criminal background checks may be required by the clinical sites. Hours could vary slightly depending upon instructional need. Students in this class may be eligible for Project Skill-Up scholarship funds. Apple Butter Days (10 Hours)
Do you long for the days of yesteryear? Join Randy McClellan as he guides students through the process of preparing delicious apple butter the old way–outside in a copper kettle. Bring a bag of Wolf River apples, small bag of sugar and a few jars for canning and you can take home the taste of the mountains. Intro to Design Basics (24 Hours)
Whether building, renovating or upgrading a home or office, the design speaks volumes about who you are. Instructor Sciara will share with students design basics to include traffic flow, space planning, composition of colors, interior and exterior design styles, and much, much more. Design structures will include homes, decks and storage areas. Class will begin at 9 AM at the Mayland Community College Avery Learning Center on September 21. Computer Basics II (24 Hours)
Expand on basic PC knowledge. We will review text editing and formatting techniques.
