From expansive mountain retreats to off-the-grid living, the 2018 Yancey County Dream Home Tour on October 5 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. offers something for everyone. Hosted by the Mayland Community College Foundation, the tour benefits MCC student scholarships.
Green Mountain Farm, developed by Brywn and Ben Philips as a way of restoring nature into their lives, is one location featured on the 2018 Home Tour. This property proved perfect in the couple’s search for mountain landscape beauty and experiencing nature without distraction and unwanted noise. This 300-acre nature retreat includes a 5,000-square-foot home, restored log cabins from the mid-1800s, a retreat center, event venue, and barn.
“The windows in our home allow for daily wildlife watching and seeing the gradual change of seasons,” said Brywn Philips. “The house gives us ample opportunity to watch our beloved natural world.”
New for the tour this year is a boxed lunch option catered by Pig and Grits of Burnsville that will be available for pre-purchase with pick-up beginning at 11 a.m. at the Farm.
Beautiful landscaping and open living spaces welcome guests at the 4,000 square foot home owned by Elliot and Patti Grosh. The home features work by local artists as well as Patti’s award-winning photography.
Completed in 2017, the 3,200 square foot home of Jon and Lucinda Williams operates completely by solar panels. This three-bedroom home sits in a peaceful setting surrounded by gardens, orchards, and roaring creek. Unique to this home is a full canning kitchen and root cellar.
“The proximity to the creek allows for cooling of the home as well as creating a peaceful sound” said the Williams as they enjoy sitting on their deck next to the creek. “This house was built according to how we want to live and the things we want to do.”
Tickets for the Yancey County Dream Home Tour are $25.
