Man Dies in Banner Elk After Truck Runs Off Road into Shawneehaw Creek at the Mill Pond near Lees-McRae

Update: Nov. 1, 2012. This morning, the Banner Elk Police Department released the name of the gentleman who was found in the Shawneehaw Creek on Oct. 30 after his vehicle ran off the road at the headwaters of the Mill Pond near the Lees-McRae College campus in Banner Elk.

His name was Jonathan Brad Markland, 37, of Roan Mountain, Tenn.

Trela Watson of the Banner Elk Police Department said the single-vehicle accident was weather related due to the roads being covered in snow.

Oct. 30, 2012.  Rescuers responded to a fatal crash in Banner Elk this morning.

At N.C. 184 and Banner Road, the Linville Central Rescue Squad responded to a call after a truck ran off the roadway and crashed into the Shanwneehaw Creek, which feeds into the Mill Pond on the campus of Lees-McRae College.

After a wrecker helped position the vehicle so rescuers could reach the victim inside the truck, the man, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, was rushed to Cannon Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to the Banner Elk Police Department.  

The police department is currently investigating the single-vehicle accident that either occurred in the middle of the night or at dawn this morning. No other details were given.

The Banner Elk Police Department, Linville Central Rescue Squad and Avery County EMS would not disclose the name of the individual because the family has not been notified.
