Lottery Players Across State Win $21.8M Last Week

Aug. 11, 2014. Three big instant scratch-off winners highlight a week that brought more than $21.8 million in prizes to lottery players across the state.

Kevin Humphrey of Greenville is the latest player to win $750,000 playing the Jumbo Bucks game. He purchased the ticket at the lottery’s regional office and claim center on Dickinson Avenue in Greenville. {Read Story}

Ralph Havis of Greensboro has owned and operated the local Beef Burger restaurant for the past 43 years. On Sunday, he purchased a Golden 7’s ticket for $5 – around the same price as a burger, fries and a drink at his restaurant – and won $150,000.

“When I saw what I had won I felt dizzy,” Havis said. “I just couldn’t believe it. I’m going to put this right in the bank. Some people talk about the fun things they would do if they won the lottery, but my fun is selling hamburgers.” {Read Story}

Michele Freeman of Charlotte scratched off the $200,000 top prize in the $200,000 Grant game. She purchased the lucky $5 ticket at the BI-LO on Pineville-Matthews Road in Pineville. {Read Story}

Since Thursday, July 31, lottery players won more than $17.8 million playing instant games and more than $4 million playing draw games. Twenty-six prizes awarded were worth between $10,000 and $50,000. In alphabetical order by the winner’s hometown, they are:

Mega Millions Report

 

Friday’s Mega Millions jackpot is an estimated $115 million if taken as an annuity or $66.9 million if taken as a lump sum. In Tuesday’sMega Millions drawing, 31,345 tickets won prizes ranging from $1 to $2,500, totaling $95,278. In the Aug. 1 drawing, 28,174 tickets won $121,980 in prizes ranging from $1 to $25,000.

 

Powerball Report

 

Saturday’s Powerball players have the chance to win a $90 million jackpot if taken as an annuity or $54 million if taken as a lump sum.Wednesday’s Powerball drawing produced 12,480 winning tickets ranging from $4 to $50,000, totaling $180,089. The Saturday, Aug. 2 Powerball drawing produced 14,196 winning tickets ranging from $4 to $20,000, totaling $110,319.

 

Where the Money Goes

 

Ticket sales have made it possible for the lottery to raise more than $3.4 billion for the state. Net proceeds are used for prekindergarten programs for at-risk four-year-olds, teachers’ salaries in grades K-3, school construction, digital learning initiatives, need-based college scholarships and financial aid.
