Lottery Players Across State Win $19M in Prizes Last Week, Mega Millions Jackpot Jumps to $84.7M

Aug. 18, 2014. Three big instant scratch-off winners and another three Carolina Cash 5 winners highlight a week that brought more than $19 million in prizes to lottery players across the state.

The new “Jackpot” family of instant scratch-off games that went on sale Aug. 5 yielded three big winners from $100,000 to $1 million this week.

Robert Phillips, a retiree from Jacksonville, plans to use the $1 million he won playing the new $1,000,000 Jackpot game to pay off his mortgage, his auto loan and take a vacation. {Read Story}

Another player won big playing the $1,000,000 Jackpot game. Charlotte resident Karen Witherspoon is the first player to win one of the game’s $100,000 prizes. She purchased the lucky $10 ticket at Mody’s Quick Shop on Prosperity Church Road in Charlotte.{Read Story}

The second largest scratch-off win of the week was awarded to Edwin Filsell, a retired truck driver from Wilmington, who plans to use the top prize he won playing the new $200,000 Jackpot game to pay off the loan on a boat that he and his son purchased and go fishing. {Read Story}

A former Sanford resident now living in Bloomingdale, Ohio won $367,515 in the July 15 Carolina Cash 5 drawing. Pamala Vargas bought the lucky ticket, which beat odds of 1 in 575,757 to win the jackpot, at the Kangaroo Express on Carthage Street in Sanford.{Read Story}

Three Carolina Cash 5 tickets matched all five numbers in the Aug. 8 drawing to split the $520,734 jackpot. Ashby Jordan of Greenville plans to use the $173,578 jackpot he won playing Carolina Cash 5 to save for retirement and take a vacation. {Read Story}

Glen Locklear of Fayetteville said that winning his $173,578 share of a Carolina Cash 5 jackpot means he can take his fiancé on a cruise to the Bahamas. But the North Carolina native almost missed the boat. “I was fixing to throw the ticket away,” Locklear said.{Read Story}

The owner of the third ticket from the Aug. 8 Cash 5 drawing, sold at the Quik Chek on Sunset Avenue in Asheboro, has yet to come forward.

Since Thursday, Aug. 7, lottery players won more than $15 million playing instant games and more than $4 million playing draw games. Sixteen prizes awarded were worth between $10,000 and $98,277. In alphabetical order by the winner’s hometown, they are:

Mega Millions Report

Friday’s Mega Millions jackpot is an estimated $144 million if taken as an annuity or $84.7 million if taken as a lump sum. In Tuesday’sMega Millions drawing, 33,411 tickets won prizes ranging from $1 to $5,000, totaling $96,871. In the Aug. 8 drawing, 38,355 tickets won $116,205 in prizes ranging from $1 to $5,000.

Powerball Report

Saturday’s Powerball players have the chance to win a $50 million jackpot if taken as an annuity or $30.5 million if taken as a lump sum.Wednesday’s Powerball drawing produced 10,693 winning tickets ranging from $4 to $200, totaling $66,848.The Saturday, Aug. 9 Powerball drawing produced 14,642 winning tickets ranging from $4 to $200, totaling $90,501.

Where the Money Goes

Ticket sales have made it possible for the lottery to raise more than $3.4 billion for the state. North Carolina Education Lottery net proceeds will be used this year to help pay salaries of teachers and teacher assistants, for pre-kindergarten programs for at-risk four-year-olds, school construction and repair, and need-based college scholarships and financial aid.
