Long Hunter Demonstration at Hickory Ridge Living History Museum July 18th

By Savannah R. Watts

Join Mike Campbell and Max Stone on July 18th from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Hickory Ridge Living History Museum for a demonstration and talk on tactics and weapons used by Long Hunters such as Daniel Boone. Mike is a longtime volunteer at the museum whose specialty is backcountry woodsmen skills. This summer, Max has been completing an internship from Flager College under Mike’s guidance. The two of them will demonstrate and discuss the lifestyle of Long Hunters.

Long Hunters braved the frontier and beyond with nothing more than minimal provisions for journeys that lasted upwards of a year. Max says, “The resourcefulness of long-hunters cannot be understated enough.” Long Hunters faced many challenges in addition to running out of supplies such as the dangers of encountering Native American attacks, animal attacks, theft, and injuries. The demonstration by Mike and Max will include examples of Long Hunter equipment and provide a black powder firing demonstration.

The Hickory Ridge Living History Museum was created in 1980 to strive to recreate the atmosphere of a small mountain community when furnishings were sparse, but the community was diverse with its religion, humor, and self-sufficiency. The Museum allows guests to tour the six cabins of variety displaying a glimpse into the Revolutionary War and Colonial Periods.

Hickory Ridge Living Hickory Museum is an authentic display of history. In addition to the six cabins, they also offer Educational Programs about mountain living from 1785-1805. Tours for the Museum Cabins are given Tuesday to Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. until November 18th. Tickets for the tours are available for $5 per adult and $3 per child from age 5-12. Self-guided tours of the Museum Cabins are available from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on show nights for the Horn in the West Outdoor Drama. Group scheduling for daytime tours is available upon prior request by calling the Museum office at (828) 264-2120.
