The Lowe’s Home Improvement in Boone has raised nearly $6,000 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association since March 1. The spring fundraiser, which is held each year across the corporation, ends April 1.

While the local store raised more than $5,000 for MDA with the help of customers purchasing shamrocks in a number of monetary increments, local employees joined the cause by holding a “Kiss the Pig” challenge recently in view of customers and an in-house silent auction. The staff “Kiss the Pig” challenge raised $987.

The top-five employees that raised the most money for the challenge were awarded with a big sloppy kiss from a four-pound pig, which happened to come from a Mocksville farm.

“We were trying to get everybody involved and get the store associates involved instead of just asking everybody else for donations,” Aaron Peele, an employee at Lowe’s Home Improvement, said, adding that it was a fun event for a good cause that customers saw in action.

One of the five employees that kissed the pig was William Burgess.

Burgess has an 8-year-old named Charlie, who was particularly tickled to see his father kiss the pig. The picture of him doing so is now hanging on Burgess’ fridge.

“He actually put forth a little money also for me to kiss the pig. When I told him I would take care of it, he told me, ‘For the kids, dad, take the money.’ He insisted on putting his money on it for MDA,” Burgess said. “I probably would have been kissing the pig either way.”

Burgess said that staff “absolutely had a good time” with the fundraiser.

“I just figured I’ve kissed worse and I even got a little squeal out of the pig. It made me happy that it was for a good cause,” Burgess said.

Peele said that the money would helps kids with MDA pay for summer camp.
