Open the Door for Three

Sept. 29, 2014. The Irish trio, Open the Door for Three, performs at the Jones House on Tuesday, continuing the Fall 2014 Jones House Indoor Concert Series, beginning at 7:30 p.m. in the Mazie Jones Gallery, with doors opening at 7:00 p.m.

Open the Door for Three, the title of an old slip-jig, brings together three dynamic musicians steeped in traditional Irish music and collaborators with a who’s who of Irish performers and recording artists.

“Though the trio is relatively new, the experience they bring collectively is incredible,” says concert organizer, Mark Freed.  “They bring an intense knowledge and sensitivity of tradition, mining tune collections and old recordings for melodies, while bringing a contemporary sense of composition, harmony, and arranging that makes a powerful presentation.”

The trio features fiddler Liz Knowles, who combines the fire and finesse of Irish fiddling with the tonal richness of the classical violin.  She became established as a sought-after virtuoso of Irish fiddling after her stint as the fiddler for Riverdance and a soloist on the film Michael Collins.  She has since performed with the New York Pops, Cincinnati Pops, Broadway, and sharing stages with the likes of Cherish the Ladies, Bobby McFerrin, Don Henley, and Tim O’Brien to name but a few.  Knowles is also an experienced teacher and will be leading an afternoon master class in Irish fiddling at the Jones House from 4:00-5:00 p.m.

Pat Broaders will perform on hi bouzar – a unique hybrid instrument that combines the bass bouzouki with the guitar.  Broaders began his journey in traditional music at the age of eight, attending the School of Music in Chatham Street in Dublin, and he has concentrated on the great songs of the Irish tradition, as well as songs and ballads from the English and Scottish traditions.  Broaders has performed and recorded with Dennis Cahill, Liz Carroll, Martin Hayes, and John Doyle, to name just a handful of collaborators.   Broaders has a long performing career with Jimmy Keane and their group, Bohola.

Kieran O’Hare will perform on the uilleann pipes, whistles, and flute.  O’Hare was the first American-born player of Irish music invited to perform in the annual Ace and Deuce of Piping concert, help in Ireland’s National Concert Hall.  As a highly respected and sought-after performer, O’Hare has performed, toured, or recorded with Mick Moloney, Liz Carroll, Jerry Holand, Bonnie Raitt, and many other internationally-recognized performers.

“We are really honored to have such veteran musicians coming to the Jones House for the concert and master classes,” says Freed.

The Jones House Indoor Concert series is produced by the Town of Boone’s Cultural Resources Department.  The Open the Door for Three residency is sponsored by Black and Global Banjo Roots, the National Endowment of the Arts, Appalachian State University’s English Department, First Year Seminar, College of Arts and Sciences, Hayes School of Music, and Theater and Arts Department.

Afternoon master classes in Irish fiddle, pennywhistle, and rhythm guitar will take place from 4:00-5:00 p.m. at the Jones House, and on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m., the group perform for a dance class in the I.G. Greer auditorium.  The workshop costs $20, or $10 with the purchase of a concert ticket.  The dance class on Wednesday is free.

Seats for the Tuesday evening concert at the Jones House are $20 each and can be reserved by contacting Mark Freed at 828.268.6280 or by email at mark.freed@townofboone.net
