LETTERS / Criticism of Capitalism is Considered Treason By Many

Dear Editor,

“The government has ceased to function, the corporations are the government.” Theodore Dreiser

Criticism of capitalism is considered treason by many. Whose interests does it serve as practiced in America? While corporations/capitalists efforts benefit a minority do you notice who government supports by their efforts? Who do you assume government operates for? American capitalism ignores the effects of its actions; too many are “kept down” for the profit of too few.

America’s current system allows corporate bribes of government to gain advantage or to prevent successful opposition. That’s not free enterprise. “Our government” and business interests have joined in what can only be called fascism, if you read the classic definitions. Government owns the means of production in socialism but American business owns the government; fascism.

Our “capitalist” medical system is one example of who wins in America where for profit medicine frequently requires you must pay in advance. If you set out to design a corrupt, inefficient, wasteful, unfair, deranged system, you would arrive at American healthcare. Corporate America has, and uses, the resources to understand compliance, exploit loopholes in the insanely complex “system” and charge us into bankruptcy for disease management.

Obama care provides powerful incentives to millions of marginal small businesses to shut down or shed employees. It was certainly written by insurance companies for their gain. Single payer would be what Obama care was advertised as, and be more cost effective.

American capitalists have a sense of entitlement and ability to blame their troubles on anything but their actions. American capitalist “leaders” refer to those who oppose the wars they profit from as “unpatriotic” or “treasonous”. American “capitalists” use the term “class warfare” to attack those who believe that the wealthy should pay a responsible share of taxes, proportionate with what America provides them. American capitalists paste “socialist” on anyone who believes that government should actively assist the most vulnerable of our citizens. They describe anyone who disagrees with “official” American history as a “loony conspiracy theorist”.

America, like the former Yugoslavia, is a collection of mutually antagonistic cultures united in name only. There’s our version of the Taliban: right-wing Christian fundamentalists who despise secular Constitutional government. There’s our intellectual underclass that has spent years soaking up Fox News and talk radio foolishness, eager to blame the collapse on anyone but themselves. Our ruthless capitalist ownership class uses every tool available to protect its wealth from the great unwashed. And we have the crystal wavers with no understanding of anything real outside of their imaginations.

America allows it’s poor to be raised in the worst possible way carefully corrupted from their earliest years. When they commit the crimes that they were predestined to commit, since birth, you punish them. Could you better explain America’s 2.5-million, capitalist, for profit, prison population today?

People trapped in materialism believe what they’re told and shown. They support what assures them of safe passage through the abnormal. They defend the conditions that enslave them, without ever investigating what those are or how it happens. They stop being their own masters, and then they can be had by anyone. We’re a nation of slaves who trust our oppressors instead of our lying eyes. We’re surrounded by the undeniable conditions of our captivity.

The public will have to face some unpleasant truths; good-paying jobs aren’t returning. Corporate interests sold them. The unimaginable deficits mean that we’re trapped in a debt system being used by the corporate state to remove what’s left of citizen’s protections, including Social Security. The state has abandoned capitalist “representational” for a new feudalism.

Food stamp use is up, as Wall Street corruption continues and bureaucrats get bigger salaries.  Health insurance is unaffordable and Medicaid users are increasing as its costs double. Many now work into their 70s, and still starve. You regularly hear about 1,000 job openings with 75,000 people applying. That’s recovery? Real unemployment is probably 25%. The economy needs 2 million new jobs a year which ain’t possible, with millions without employment now, for years. Government persists in pleasing their corporate partners leaving crumbs for the rest of us.

We pay for environmental and social destruction dropped on society by corporations that take profits from not having to consider those costs. This is the way unregulated capitalism works. You live in America, which has “freedom and democracy” and “accountable” government and “accountable” corporations. Don’t worry; government and corporations are taking care of you. Your living standards, health and safety are governed in America by the relentless pursuit of profit by those who own and operate you.

Until we refuse to accept the hypocrisy, we will be owned by tyrannical whims from those who rule. Fascist America is so dependent on insane state spending that the propaganda parakeets go insane at the vision of any reduced spending. Central planners’ policies are punishing careful citizens while rescuing the irresponsible. All of this happens because you are silent.

The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie; deliberate, contrived and dishonest, but the myth, persistent, persuasive, and unrealistic. Belief in myths allows the comfort of opinion without the discomfort of thought.” John F. Kennedy
