Lees-McRae Summer Theatre presents ‘Chicago’, ‘The 39 Steps’ and ‘Singin’ in the Rain’

July 9, 2013. If you like to sit back and watch a great show, then Lees-McRae’s Summer Theatre productions are right up your alley! With three fantastic performances scheduled from July 1 – August 10, you’ll have plenty of chances to enjoy the thrills of Broadway in your own backyard. This year’s productions are “Chicago” “The 39 Steps” and “Singin’ in the Rain”.

LeesStarting off the season from July 1-7, “Chicago” is sure to be a crowd favorite. This well-known production features everything a great performance should!

“We’ve wanted to produce Chicago for several years, and audiences have been asking for it for some time,” said Dr. Michael Hannah, director and costume designer for “Chicago”. “We were able to secure the rights for this year and we’re giving the audiences what they’ve been wanting.”

In roaring twenties Chicago, chorine Roxie Hart murders a faithless lover and convinces her hapless husband Amos to take the rap…until he finds out he’s been duped and turns on Roxie. Convicted and sent to death row, Roxie and another “Merry Murderess” Velma Kelly, vie for the spotlight and the headlines, ultimately joining forces in search of the “American Dream”: fame, fortune and acquittal.

Dr. Hannah added, “Chicago is a dark musical satire that’s probably even more relevant today than it was when the show premiered in the mid-1970s or in the 1920s when the original story took place. Our society makes celebrities out of criminals and seems to reward bad behavior with media attention. TV shows focus on sensational crime trials, and we can’t get enough. Chicago speaks directly to us and makes us question how far we’d all go to have our five minutes of fame.”

“Chicago” will be performed on the following dates and times: July 1, 3, 5 and 6 at 7 p.m., and July 3, 6, and 7 at 2 p.m.
