In 1960, director Roger Corman created Little Shop of Horrors, a cheap horror film about a man-eating plant and the nasty things it forces its discoverer to do to keep it alive. In 1982 the film was adapted into a stage musical, and then four years later it became a popular movie musical.
The Lees-McRae Theater Arts program will present the stage musical in Hayes Auditorium and Broyhill Theatre from Oct. 5–7. “Little Shop is a fun parody of all the silly—and sometimes badly done—horror films of the late 1950s and early 1960s,” said Michael Hannah, professor of theatre arts and director of Little Shop of Horrors. “It is an over-the-top romp through a silly plot, exaggerated characters, and some nostalgic music that makes you feel like you’ve gone back in time to the early rock-n-roll era.” “The dialogue is melodramatic and the characters are stereotypical of those in the 1960s monster films,” Hannah said. “While feeding people to a plant seems horrible on the surface, this musical keeps it silly enough to be entertaining and not too scary.” The production features freshman Jesse Morris as the hapless Seymour, senior Sabrina Becker as Audrey, sophomore DeVon Thomas as flower shop owner Mushnick, junior Logan Bryant as Orin (and several other characters), junior Andrew Sargent as the puppeteer, and sophomore Katie Birks-Kilman as the voice of Audrey II. Rounding out the cast are senior Sarah Wilson and juniors Alice Gomez and Taylor Noll as the urchins/Greek chorus. Kellyn Hawley serves as stage manager, with Elise Wright as assistant stage manager. Music director is Kathy Den Bleyker-Thomas, scenic designer is Danielle Curtis, lighting designer is Ariana Cato-Chapman, sound designer is Scott Koenig, and Hannah also serves as costume designer. Shows begin at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 5–6, and 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 7 in Hayes Auditorium and Broyhill Theatre. General seating tickets can be purchased at the door one hour prior to showtime or online here. Tickets are $12 for adults and $5 for students and children.
