Laura Barry Named New Watauga High School Women’s Basketball Coach

Laura Barry has been selected as the new women’s basketball coach for the varsity team at Watauga High School. Barry will also teach marketing at the high school.

Laura Berry“We are delighted to announce the addition of Laura Barry to our faculty at Watauga High School,” remarked Superintendent Dr. Scott Elliott. “She has the right combination of experience, energy, and character to be a great leader for our young women at the high school. We look forward to the work she will do with our students both in the classroom and on the court.”

Assistant Superintendent and Human Resources Director Dr. Stephen Martin said that Barry’s selection followed an extensive search and interview process. “She is a highly qualified person who is committed to building a strong program from the ground up,” Martin commented. “We are confident she is the right person for this role and we are very excited about having her as part of our team.”

Barry has considerable athletics experience as well as excellent academic credentials. She served for three years as an assistant basketball coach at East Tennessee State University and two years as a graduate assistant coach at St. John’s University. While at St. John’s, she helped the team reach its first-ever Sweet Sixteen appearance as well as six wins over teams ranked in the top 25 in the country.

Barry played college basketball as a guard at UNC Chapel Hill under Coach Sylvia Hatchell. Her tenure in Coach Hatchell’s highly successful program included two ACC championships and a trip to the Final Four in 2007.

Barry obtained her MBA from St. John’s University and completed her bachelor’s degree at UNC-Chapel Hill with a double major in communications and exercise/sports science.

A native of Cary, NC, Barry was an all-conference basketball player in her junior and senior seasons of high school and was team captain as a senior. She also played soccer for three years and was an Honor Roll student all four years.
