Late Saturday The ‘Monsoon Begins,’ Flash Flooding A Possibility in SW Virginia and NW NC From Sunday On

By Jesse Wood

May 3, 2013. The National Weather Service is monitoring a complex and slow moving area of low pressure that will drift across the Southeast late Saturday and on into the week, bringing more rain and colder temperatures as time passes, according to Phil Hysell of NWS Blackburg, Va., Station.

A potential four inches of rain is expected with flash flooding most likely in southwest Virginia to northwest North Carolina, according to NWS.

Ray’s Weather is forecasting a few dry hours early Saturday before “the monsoon begins.”

“Light rain will be possible Saturday afternoon increasing Saturday night. Sunday and Monday will be washouts. Expect 2″-3″ of rain with some 4″ totals. Flooding is a decent bet Sunday night and Monday,” according to Ray’s Weather.

David Still, Ray’s Weather meteorologist for the Boone office, said on Friday, “Kayakers are going to love it.”

Here’s a NWS video weather briefing regarding the potential for heavy rain/flooding from Sunday into early next week:
